Pain, Not Fear

This is an important meme. Express why you don't like and hence try to avoid certain things, well-meaning people will put it down to bad experiences in the past causing a fear or phobia in the present, which is to be overcome by exposing yourself to the very thing you are seeking to avoid. This is entirely the wrong approach, based on a complete misdiagnosis. The aversion that autistic people show when faced with certain things is not the result of fear but of a very reasonable assessment of the pain such things cause them. The people who put aversion down to fear are not only wrong, they make aspersions with respect to autistic people that are harmful. Autistic people are not cowards unwilling to try things, they know fine well that such things cause them pain. People should take note.
