IMAGINE

This was one of the memes I posted after it became clear to me, reading up on AS and discussing my findings with my doctor, that I was indeed somewhere 'on the spectrum.' The tests I repeatedly did put me well over the threshold.

I had hoped that memes, being somewhat concise and direct, would convey a lot of information in a form that requires little effort. I added a little rationale of my own. The intention was to invite emphathy and incite reflection.

I have found that people who love to post John Lennon's Imagine are singularly lacking in that very quality. Their interest is passive rather than active, going no further than a slogan or a matter, which they take as an excuse to express sympathy, and think no further. The people who 'like' memes like this are the same people who will carry on thoughtlessly with behaviour that causes and intensifies the pain of autistic people. Their passive assent to a slogan or a motto makes them feel good, entitled to carry on as usual.

Being 'awkward' - that is, being autistic - I am beholden to point out some hard truths. And if that makes people uncomfortable, then some people need to be discomforted. Because autistic people suffer daily as a result of their complacency, their wilful ignorance, their laziness.
